Christian and I met in the Oil & Gas industry. I have to say he is as dedicated in the gym as he is to his job outside of the gym. Christian you are always leading by example. I appreciate everything you bring to our community, especially your hard work and dedication. Great work and keep it up! Stay Humble Hungry and Happy.
1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I am married to my beautiful wife Stacey, and we have 3 awesome kids, Lachlan (12), Chloe (4), and Cameron (1). Houston has been home for over 10 years now, but I was raised in Florida and spent all my free time in some type/body of water. I swam competitively from age 5 around the SE United States and that eventually landed me a scholarship to swim in college. I received my degree from Florida Atlantic University in Ocean Engineering while swimming all 4 years. I work currently as a Project Manager for and oil and gas contractor. My time in the industry has allowed me to execute subsea oil and gas projects all over the world from Ghana to Australia.
2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?
My lifelong nickname is Beezer. My mom gave it to me when I was born with a wicked buzz cut and wheezing/ had difficulty breathing (from bad childhood asthma). Luckily with all the swimming I did as a kid I was able to grow out of the worst of it, and was only left with the nickname. Also, a little-known fact is that I worked a field development project with Coach George in 2013-2014. It was my first time as subsea engineering lead and George left a great impression on me at our interface meetings. It is not the easiest to make friends on a fast track subsea project in which every company has their own agendas.
3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
CrossFit is still new to me (10 months in now), but it brought everything I was missing from my long-ago structured swimming days. I was tired of just going to a normal gym and was unmotivated. It was too easy for me to skip or just focus on one muscle group since I rarely followed any programming. I wanted a change in my approach. I knew I needed a coach, a workout I couldn’t modify, and the social/team atmosphere again. I had followed Hippo since George and I were friends on Facebook and I started looking around the website. Eventually this winter/new year I made myself reach out for a trial and the rest is history. CrossFit has delivered everything I had hoped and more, except the constant soreness!
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?
By far the community here at Hippo. I love that regardless of your athletic ability everyone is focused on one thing, getting better. CrossFit has changed my physical and mental health for the better. I also enjoy the Wodify data/tracking system. It is fun to see everyone else crush a WOD, but it allows you to focus on yourself and the path you are taking to improve on your own terms.
6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
I really enjoyed completing Murph this year, but I have to say having my son complete a couple workouts with me has been my favorite moment so far.
7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Lately my favorite movement has been squat clean. As I get better at the Olympic movements, I am starting to like them more and feel comfortable increasing my weight. My least favorite movement is anything I have not mastered yet (muscle ups, double unders), but I am working to get those. Oh yeah and overhead squats are pretty terrible!
8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
To be able to complete each workout Rx everyday. My cardio/endurance has really improved, but I am still working my strength up to be able to complete some of the heavier Rx WODs. I hope to be there in a years’ time, which includes double unders and muscle ups!
9. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
As I stated before, Hippo has had a huge impact on my physical and mental health. I can now run a sub 6:30 mile and lift heavier than ever before. After completing the nutritional challenge this year, I shredded my body and most importantly my visceral fat levels. Being able to see the results on the InBody was my way of knowing I was doing everything I could to stay healthy for my family. As an added bonus, I can continue to carry Chloe easily (which she loves to ask me to do all the time), where before it was hard to do as she got bigger. I look forward to doing the same with Cameron in the future. Mentally, I am always working to be a better husband and dad. By taking the time for myself every day at Hippo, it has really helped me take my stress, concerns, and anxiety and focus them as workout fuel everyday @ 1130. When I am home in the evenings, I can give me attention to my family which they deserve after everyone’s long day of work and school.
10. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?
CrossFit and I will go a step further, this box, is different than anything out there, because of the programming, the coaches, and the “herd”. Hippo puts all you need there in front of you to allow anyone, who really really wants it, succeed. I have dropped in quite a few boxes this year while away on work and there is nothing like Hippo out there.
11. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
I enjoy long endurance WODs that keep you moving and on a pace. I guess because previously I was a long distance swimmer, so:
1 mile run buy-in, 30 min AMRAP
10x push ups
8x air squats
6x pull ups
4x box jumps
2x rope climbs
12. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Being with my family on an adventure/walking/riding bikes or a simple movie/pizza night cuddled up on the couch. We have been very lucky to travel/vacation to some amazing places as a family. Doing Crossfit will keep me active with my kids and all our future adventures!
