Fern thank you for being awesome! We love having you in our afternoon classes! You give it your all each day and it shows! Thank you for being you! Stay Humble Hungry and Happy!
1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
Born and raised in Mexico, I came to the US about 13 years ago. I graduated from Texas A&M where for four and a half years (yay for a half victory lap) I can proudly say that I drank all of the kool-aid and turned into an avid fan of anything Aggie. I enjoy watching football with my family, a good whisky on the weekends, and the occasional game of roller derby to keep that blood pumping.
2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?
I am a three year All American collegiate archer for Texas A&M.
3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
After taking a year to focus on myself I decided to try out a new physical activity. I wanted to try out something that REALLY intimidated me but that I also felt would be interesting to me. Voila! in comes CrossFit into my life.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?
I love that CrossFit really is for everyone. Tall? You’ll do great with rowing. Short? BURPEES FOR YOU MY FRIEND! Slim? Get those muscle ups! Thicc? Thrusters on thrusters on thrusters. Regardless of how you look like, one thing might completely suck…but also, so many more things will come in easier, just because of who and how you are you!
6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Being able to deadlift more than my own weight was pretty awesome, not gonna lie!
7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
I am still not the greatest at them but when the movement is smooth, snatches are top notch, deadlifts are a good reliable ‘always there for you’ second. Burpees could disappear from the face of the earth overnight and I would not shed a single tear.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
OH MAN. So many! Double unders, over 200lbs back squat, handstand push ups!!!, running anything haha, toes to bar, pull ups…. I am at different lengths with all of them, but I think I’ll be able to reach the back squat one first! Only 20lbs to go.
9. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
Oh man, CrossFit Hippo has given me a lot. Not just the obvious things like losing weight and gaining physical strength but also subtle (and more importantly) ‘inside’ things. Thanks to CrossFit Hippo I am the PROUD owner of my body. That is not something I would have been able to say before. I am happy and proud of my body. Can I further improve it? Of course! There will always be room to grow. But physical changes are easy, you just do the thing over and over until results show up. Emotional, mental, behavioral change? That is a hard one. The coaches, staff and even other members of the box have helped me and given me the tools to love and accept myself for me, regardless of what package I come in.
10. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?
CrossFit doesn’t care. I can’t tell you how many other things I have tried. All of the different sports, all the types of dancing, all the different activities that I attempted, all to try and find something where I could exercise but I ALWAYS very much felt like a ‘square peg in a round whole’. CrossFit doesn’t care. Messy hair, big thighs, large arms, a foot taller than every other female in the room? CrossFit doesn’t care. My messy hair means that I worked hard. My big thighs help me push the bar every time I do a power clean. My large arms help me with this heavy ass deadlift. My height helps me finish that row a lot easier than other people. CrossFit doesn’t care what you look like, just use it to your advantage.
11. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
Does a 60-minute yoga of zombie position count? Hahaha. Probably something involving deadlifts and one armed kettlebell cleans.
12. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Being around my friends!! Whether it be trying out a new restaurant, at a concert, travelling or simply hanging out.
