Kristen is one of our original members and we have had the pleasure of watching her develop as a CrossFit Athlete. She has run more marathons than I can count and has a heart of gold. Kristen is consistently making an effort to show up work hard and help anyone that needs it. We are honored to announce she is our Athlete of the Month of May! Keep up the great work Kristen and stay Humble – Hungry – and Happy!

1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I am married with a 25-year-old daughter who also likes to CrossFit.

2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?

 I spent more time on the weekends growing up at dirt track stock car races than I did at home.

3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

I started CrossFit because I had been running marathons for about 15 years and working out at a traditional gym.  I had some nagging issues with my right leg that with treatments and trying to strength train would not go away.  …and I was finding myself completely uninspired during my daily workouts.  I needed something new and something that would hopefully strengthen the weak links that were causing me problems.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT? 

 I enjoy the community of CrossFit and have really come to joy the constantly varied workouts.

6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

 I have 2 that I can think of.  The time I ran 2 miles with a 14 lb vest faster than my previous 2 mile time without the vest.

Also, each year I’m very proud about completing MURPH.  To me it’s the sense of accomplishment plus the meaning behind why we do MURPH each year that is so important.

7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

I really like Back Squats and Cleans.  I really dislike Snatch, but it is mostly because I struggle with it so much.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

 My CrossFit Goals have been the same for a while and I haven’t had a lot of extra time to work on them in the last year.   I want to get Pullups, Pushups and Double Unders chained together.

My Pullups are still a while off.  My Pushups, I can do strict for 5-10 max right now and negatives really helped me so much with these!  Double Unders! I can get one and stop and can’t string them together.

9. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

CrossFit Hippo has had a positive impact for me both in and out of the gym.  I enjoy coming to the gym each night and I enjoy the community.  It helps me progress when everybody supports each other.

I am so much stronger than when I first started.  I seriously was starting to lose even hand strength before I started at Hippo and that isn’t a problem at all.  Lifting things outside of the gym are easier too!

10. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST? 

 I have been part of a running group for many years and that had a community too, so I had that before but in the gym.  It was just me alone doing my thing and a few people I’d say hello to once in a while.  That isn’t the case with Hippo.  I always liked to lift weights, but the constantly varied workouts and doing movements I had never ever done before and learning so many new things makes it so very different for me.

12. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

Run or spend time with my family.
