Athlete of the Year
Roddie, thank you for being awesome and staying committed this past year. Despite your constant international travels and training for a half marathon, you have managed to stay positive and engaged with the gym. You are always a bright spot of encouragement for everyone you meet. You epitomize the moto “You are never too busy to make time to exercise.” Great Job! You are our Athlete of the Year 2018!
1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
Reformed foodaholic, husband and father of four. I have an amazing, patient and beautiful wife plus four kids wired to the moon. Have been doing CrossFit for 3-1/2 years at Hippo. I am also currently Sr. VP for Marketing, Innovation and Industry Relations at Transocean.
2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?
If you didn’t know me before CrossFit: I used to weigh over 270 lbs. Other than that: I have lived in eight different countries on five continents.
3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I was in very bad shape physically and Michelle had been encouraging me to do something for a while and an equally unhealthy buddy of mine went and lost 100 lbs, then he opened a CrossFit box… on the way to my work… finally out of excuses… Hippo.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?
The peeps! Other than being able to do things that I previously couldn’t and having the energy to get through 10 times what I used to, the best thing about CrossFit is the people. It might be the cliché of CrossFit but it is just a fact, yeah we have a few over-competitive folks and the occasional clique but the VAST majority are down-to-earth, hardworking, honest folks making at better go at life and always supporting each other. I still play back the moment during one of my early WOD’s on a Saturday when the numbers of reps left was just too many and I was the only one who hadn’t finished, it simply couldn’t be done, then someone said “just do them one at a time” and started to do it with me, then everyone was counting out and doing my reps, holy crap I can’t quit now! Loudest cheer for the person in last place, that just doesn’t happen anywhere else.
6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Completing Murph with a vest in less than an hour. That was crazy, but very rewarding and Michelle was there with me doing Murph as well, that was cool.
7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite: Snatch – all technique, really difficult and I am crap at it but it feels awesome when you get one right!
Least favorite: running – just not built for running, honestly does anyone like running?
8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
Last year I got Murph Rx and first Muscle Up. This year I will do the Houston half marathon and also compete in my first CrossFit competition. It will happen!
9. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
First, I wanted to realize my potential at work and looking around at others who were successful it was obvious that eating buckets of ice cream and taking afternoon naps was not going to get it done. Long story short, losing 50lbs and sticking CrossFit was the catalyst for much greater achievement, promotions and now I’m the executive sponsor of Transocean’s fitness challenges encouraging others to do the same (seriously!!??). However the biggest impact is having the energy to keep up with my family: four young kids, career, travel, no way I could keep up being unfit and obese.
10. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?
Welcoming, inclusive, accountability, variety, never ever boring or predictable! ANYONE can do it, the depth of scaling options is clever: everyone is working out together (fit, unfit, elite and beginner all in the same class). Also love the acknowledgment and respect paid to our armed forces and first responders: there is something very humble and grounded about the entire CrossFit movement, it’s not about the individual.
11. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
For time: Bucket of ice cream and a nap. No, no! Heavy deadlifts, sit-ups, rowing, squat cleans, but it has to be a partner WOD, love those!
12. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Hanging with the family and building stuff at our ranch. Even had the herd help out on the last project, turned out great, thanks Hippos!!!
