Athlete of the Month – Maria De La Mora
Maria we are extremely proud of you and your hard work. You are doing so great on your nutrition and killing it in the gym. You exemplify our core values of Humble – Hungry – Happy. Your smile and bright spirit light up the gym. You are always willing to scale appropriately and you are consistently looking to grow and improve. Congrats on the well-deserved recognition of Athlete of the Month!
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. I am a mother, wife, daughter, teacher, dog mom, cat mom, cross fitter, runner, and the oldest sister of three. Pretty busy lady here!
2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT? I come from a family where education was not an option, food was scarce, and survival was an everyday struggle. My mother had to drop school in the 3rd grade to be able to get a job so that she could have a meal for the day. At age 8, she was working full time in the fields picking strawberries. With such hard circumstances, my mother immigrated to the USA at age 18. Later she became a mother, and worked her a** off to make sure her children had a better chance at life. Thanks to her unconditional love and support, and of course, my husband Jaime’s tremendous patience, encouragement, and never-ending love, I was able to finish graduate school in May of 2018. Having my daughters witness mommy walking the stage still gets me teary eyed today. I am a proud Mexican American woman that truly believes that anything in life worth having is worth working for no matter what life throws at you.
3.WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT? I wanted to do something different in my exercise routine. In 2013, I learned that my friend started CrossFit, so I went in for a free trial. I was so in love! So much in love that I became L1 CrossFit certified in 2015. With going back to school, it was hard to find time to be able to coach.
4.WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT? I love that I can push my body to limits I never thought possible. For example, the day I discovered I was able to back squat, front squat, and deadlift my husband’s body weight, made me feel like a super woman lol! I also love the community aspect and close friendships I have built throughout the years.
5.WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT? Back in 2013 when I first started CrossFit, I remember I could not do a kipping pull up, and always used a band. Exactly a year later I was able to do a kipping pull up with no band. Although I should have learned strict pull-ups first, this was such a proud moment for me.
6.WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE? My favorite CrossFit lift is power clean, and my least favorite movement is ring muscle up progressions because I am really bad at that lol!
7.WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM? To be able to do all the movements would me amazing, but I would have to quit my job and go in full time training. Lol! So let me narrow it down to a few targeted areas. I would like to be able to do five strict pull ups consecutively. I currently am able to do two. I would also like to improve my form on the kipping pull-ups so I can do 10 or more consecutively.
8.WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM? Out of the five years, I have done CrossFit, I have never stuck to attending class more than 4x a week. At HIPPO I have been motivated to be part of the “Commitment Club” which is 20 classes a month or 5x a week. This has made me get rid of all excuses, and show up even when I do not feel like it (and sometimes I do not feel like it!) I have learned new things on following a ketogenic diet, and as I am learning and trying every day to be consistent and committed, sometimes it gets hard and life happens. Outside of the gym, I have learned to build a healthier relationship with food. I have learned to be more self-confident. I feel happy to see how different my clothes fits me and feel hopeful to reach my goal weight. I have influenced my family members to eat healthier foods.
9..WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU HAVE TRIED IN THE PAST? Before CrossFit, I played soccer in both co-ed and all women’s teams. I also jogged short distances for the cardio. When I joined a local gym I had a personal trainer who taught me how to lift weights, and I quickly realized I really enjoyed it! When I found CrossFit, it was like having a personal trainer, but with a group of friends that pushed me to try my best in every workout! It could not get any better than that!
10.IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? It most definitely has to have running and power cleans in it and maybe a chipper. Something like…(maybe we’ve done something similar)

11.WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO? When I am not working out I really enjoy spending time with my family and trying different delicious foods. Date nights are the best with my hubby and no kiddos! Call me crazy but I also enjoy going on long runs and zoning out on some gangster rap!
