Athlete of the Month – Dusty Ballew

Dusty is a great member of our community and a dear friend.  He is not only crushing his goals, he also crushed his first RX Murph after winning the Nutrition Challenge 2018! His attitude remains hilarious and coachable.  Thanks Dusty for being a genuinely good dude and crushing that fitness.

  1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

No, I don’t like talking about myself.

But if I must… I’m 34 and from North Louisiana.  My wife of 10 years, Julie, is from South Louisiana; so, that makes me a Yankee and her a swamp creature.  We have two boys that you’ve probably seen on Saturdays, Isaac and Rhett.   

If you want more… Grew up in North Louisiana, Went to LSU, dropped out of LSU, started a band and played bass, quit the band, married the drummer’s sister, went back to LSU, the two kids joined the crew, graduated, moved to Houston for work, trapped in Houston. 

I’ve been middle class and white my whole life so I really don’t get offended by much.  Yeah, there’s that.

Um… you want more?  I can talk about some family issues?  No?  You’re good? ok. 

  1. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?

Most people think I’m all jokes but I’m actually a serious person most of the time.  That and I wear woman’s underwear sometimes.

  1. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

I forgot.

  1. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

When we do a WOD that I’ve already done and current Dusty beats past Dusty.  I really enjoy kicking younger Dusty’s ass at physical fitness.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

The first time Shaun said something mean to me.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

Favorite:  Leg swings and pigeon stretch.

Least Favorite:  Pistols.  For real, why are we still doing these?  Handstand pushups are a close second because there are other ways to do the same workout without going upside down or hitting your head on the floor.

  1. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

The last few I got were 300lb deadlift, 10 butterfly pull-ups, and 100 consecutive double unders.  Current goals are 1) 3 consecutive ring muscle-ups, 2) 185lb clean and jerk, and 3) 2 mile run in 15 minutes.

  1. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

Hard to put into words the ‘out of the gym’ impact (I’ll try though).  Just knowing that there is a group of people that actually care about your wellbeing is powerful.  I’m not used to that and it throws me off sometimes.  Its crazy, anything from trying to PR a lift to a family member being sick, the herd is right there.  You guys are relentlessly awesome!  I wish I could care a quarter as much as some of you folks… I’m trying.

  1. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

The slow jams in the shower.

  1. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

Strung Out, Backwards, and Upside-down Fran while listening to the band Strung Out (thrusters, pull-ups, and running).  I’m not really inventing a workout, just forcing people to listen to good music while they do it.

  1. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

I enjoy a good mosh pit!
