Jim Earley

Jim exemplifies what we mean when we say “Age is just a number!” Jim is getting after it in the gym improving his mobility, losing weight, getting stronger and improving his ability to do the things he loves.  Some days Jim comes twice a day to be sure he gets a good workout with his buddy Clay then comes back later making sure his lovely wife Stacey has company when she gets her fitness on!  Jim you have a heart of gold and we are SO proud of you for everything you have accomplished here at CrossFit Hippo!  If Jim isn’t at CrossFit Hippo you can probably find him flying through the sky at 99 and I-10 around sunset.  Keep up the great work and be careful flying around Katy,Texas!

1.TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

Since leaving the farm at 19 I’ve never had a job outside of aviation. Flight Instructor, Air Transport Pilot, Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic. Helicopter, single and multi-engine airplane. Mountain and bush flying, wheels and skis, offshore helicopter, Life Flight, now Paramotor. Married to the love of my life, Stacey, who gave us two fine, independent sons, James and George, who don’t ask for money and visit often.

2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?

I have a YouTube channel with almost a dozen subscribers. It even has a Hippo video.

3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

“I’ll do it if you do it.”, I said to Clay. He called my bluff.
Now I am support staff for Clay, Stacey and Piri.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?

I love the positive, enthusiastic support. The coaches are real experts
and great teachers. Advice from them is always useful. I drive past 3 CrossFit Boxes to get to Hippo.

6. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

45 years ago I climbed a rope daily. Now I can do it again.

7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

Favorite- Snatch, because it is such a challenge to do right.

Least Favorite—- some kind of crab crawl thing that Courtney made us do, I scaled it with upright walking instead.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

Flexibility and wind were my first
goals. They have both noticeably improved thanks to CrossFit.
Now my goal is to maintain and slowly improve both flexibility and wind.

9. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

My hobby is Paramotor. With better fitness everything is easier. I run with my arms out and then fly!

10. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?

CrossFit has found places to make sore that I didn’t know I had. But it’s a good “sore”. The muscle soreness that comes with a good workout is familiar to me even though I’ve never worked out before, I just worked. Today I am more fit all-around than in the last 20 years.

11. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

Here is the one that I do at home.
The Jim Earley 300.

10 rounds :
10 pushups
10 situps
10 squats

I count to three hundred changing movement every 10. It takes me about 12 minutes.

12. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

Spending time with Stacey. I even prefer that to flying my paramotor.
