I would like to take a minute to share why the coaching staff here at CrossFit Hippo chose Victor for athlete of the month.  Victor embodies the hard working, friendly and consistent athlete we are looking for in our community.  He will show up early and stay after to work on weaknesses and is constantly asking for help improving.  Victor goes to a couple different class times depending on work but all of those classes are a little more fun with him in them.  Thank you Victor for being awesome!  Keep up the great work!  You are absolutely crushing your goals this year!  Here is a little bit about Victor! 

VICTOR AYALA

  1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

Proud father of a freshman in college. I’m working on becoming an RN. Life has been anything but easy but I’ve learned so much. Have lived in the worst neighborhood in a make shift room in a garage in Compton, CA in the 90’s to now happy owner of a home in Katy, Texas.

  1. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?

I tried to join the Marine Corp fresh out of high school. I trained and studied since 10th grade to join the Marines but due to a tattoo that sticks out ½ inch in the back of my neck and out of my shirt I couldn’t.

  1. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

Coach Fabiola, she wasn’t a coach when I met her but I was impressed with her strength and her dedication to health that it intrigued me enough to try it. She’s a great role model.

  1. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT? 

How challenging it is. I don’t see myself getting bored or thinking ok I’ve mastered CrossFit I’m done with it.

  1. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

The day I got the courage to try it because without that day the rest wouldn’t be possible. 

  1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

Don’t know that I have a favorite but so far I’m good at running lol the rest for the movements have been all new to me and I continue to struggle on many of the techniques. I specially struggle with overhead movements.

  1. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

Double Unders are my kryptonite and HSPU along with OH movements. I truly haven’t made effort to learn double unders or do to the painful process. Its going on a year now and I think it’s time to start training.

  1. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

CrossFit Hippo has been a huge part of my improving my blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and overall health. Houston Methodist does annual biometrics and my numbers since I started at Hippo have improved dramatically.

  1. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST

I use to go to the “gym” I’d get on a treadmill and run, find a machine or two and wait for my turn…just got bored of the routine and seeing little to no results. CrossFit is different, day to day, week to week, month to month and so on. Yes workouts get repeated but each time a different result or improve comes up…heavier weight getting done faster etc.

  1. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?

Deadlift and running and maybe push-ups lol like I said before I still don’t feel like an expert in any aspect of CrossFit.

  1. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

I enjoy spending time with my daughter and my parents, eating, movies or just hanging out at home.
