Congrats Alec! You are our Athlete of the Month for November! What can I say about Alec other than we met at CrossFit Fulshear while I was a coach there. He has always been able put a smile on my face. Alec pursued his passion to become a great Level 1 Trainer and carries an Olympic Lifting Certification as well. Alec is as good of a member of our community as he is an avid CrossFitter. He drives in from the Galleria area to workout with our 5am class. The coaches chose you for athlete of the month because you have been really pushing lately and you have a great attitude! Alec, thank you for being an amazing part of our community. Keep up the great work! Who will be our Athlete of the Year next month?
1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I like to shoot guns, lift heavy shit, drink coffee and eat meat. I’m happily married to my wife, Miranda. I work to live, not the other way around and I love to travel. I’ve been to 13 different countries including the US and I love my huge, crazy, noisy family.
2. WHAT IS ONE THING WE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU OR BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT?
Despite the Polish last name, I’m mostly Scottish, but technically I’m also African-American. My dad was born and raised in South Africa and immigrated here when he was about 15. Not sure I can say that without pissing people off…but that’s something interesting not everyone knows!
3. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I’d heard about it from friends and one opened up near my house (CrossFit Fulshear) at the time. I originally started out to get strong, but kinda fell for all the other stuff.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT?
The community for sure. I like the workout style and I enjoy the challenge, but ultimately the people make it the most fun. Getting to lift heavy shit and suffer through your programming with my friends every morning is the best part 😉
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Probably either bar muscle-ups or my first time lifting 225 off the ground and over my head.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Favorite: Heavy cleans
Least favorite: Thrusters
7. WHAT ARE YOUR CROSSFIT GOALS? HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
Attain ring muscle-ups. My strength is there, I just have some technique things to iron out.
Triple-unders. I can do 1-2 but I can’t string them together
Bodyweight snatch. I weigh 175 right now after finishing RP and my PR is 165.
8. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HIPPO HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
It’s helped me be more disciplined and more patient. Improvements in CrossFit are not gained through luck or shortcuts, but hard work, discipline and patience.
9. WHAT MAKES CROSSFIT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER FITNESS PROGRAMS THAT YOU’VE TRIED IN THE PAST?
It has a perfect balance of strength and conditioning and has gotten me in shape for any activity I could think of. I’ve been able to do everything from the Hippo Lift-Off to a 12-mile Tough Mudder all without any specialty training.
10. IF YOU COULD CREATE A WOD, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE?
One of my favorite WODs was open WOD 16.2
Beginning on a 4-minute clock, complete as many reps as possible of:
15 squat cleans, 135 / 85 lb.
If completed before 4 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
13 squat cleans, 185 / 115 lb.
If completed before 8 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
11 squat cleans, 225 / 145 lb.
If completed before 12 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
9 squat cleans, 275 / 175 lb.
If completed before 16 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
7 squat cleans, 315 / 205 lb.
Stop at 20 minutes.
11. WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CROSSFIT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
Shoot guns. Pistols right now, but I’m going to do my first AR build in 2018.
